Leaking Water From Air Conditioning System
I have heard many questions about an Air conditioner but one of the most common questions I get is why their air conditioning system is leaking water into their home.
This can occur for a few different reasons. Fortunately, most are an easy fix.
What causes water to form in my air conditioning system?
There's a piece of your air conditioning system called an evaporator coil. The evaporator coil works to cool warm air as it blows over it.
As this process takes place, condensation can form on the coils similar to how water forms on a glass of water on a hot summer day.
When your air conditioning system is functioning as it should, the excess condensation should drip into the drip pan and down through a condensate line that leads to the outside of your home.
Unfortunately, certain factors can cause this condensation to drain insufficiently (or not at all) and go into your home, which is obviously no good.
Here are the most 3 common reasons that cause your AC to leak water:
1. Dirty air filter
The air filter works to remove debris from the air before it blows over the evaporator coil. If the air filter is too dirty, air won't be able to flow through. When this happens, the evaporator coil can freeze over, resulting in melting water that drips into your home.
The solution: Swap the dirty air filter for a new one and make a point to do this once a month.
2. The drain line is clogged
Over time, the drain line can become backed up thanks to debris. When this happens, condensation can build up and leak into your home.
The solution: If your drain line is clogged, you have two options: remove the clog yourself or call your local HVAC professional for help.
3. The drain pan is damaged
The drain pan collects water that forms within your AC, and it needs to be replaced from time to time. If the drain pan is old and rusty, the water will fall right through.
The solution: Simply replace the drain pan with a new one.
